HDMI and PD3200U in 2560 x 1440 Mode

DMG Oct 25, 2017 12:22PM CDT

I have an issue with a new PD3200U and a one of the laptops I use frequently, a Macbook 12" (2017 model) running macOS Sierra v10.12.6

The monitor is connected via an Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter; connects to monitor using the BenQ-supplied HDMI and USB cables.

The setup works fine in 3840x2160 mode. However, fonts and graphics are too small in this mode. Apple would normally scale to 2560 x 1440 for a monitor of this size.

PROBLEM: The 2560 x 1440 mode is not available by default on the macbook.

I can make 2560 x 1440 mode appear by pressing Alt key while clicking "Scaled" option in System Preferences => Displays, but selecting 2560 x 1440 produces ugly badly-scaled visual results (which is not surprising - Apple hides bad/non-native modes behind the "Alt" key press deliberately).

I also tested with a MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has the same issue when using HDMI. When using DisplayPort however, 2560 x 1440 mode works correctly. So lack of support for 2560 x 1440 seems to be specific to HDMI.

I also tested with an older BenQ model, the BL3201PH. BL3201PH works fine with MacBook in 2560 x 1440 mode; issue appears to be specific to this newer PD3200U.

Any suggestions? Otherwise I will be returning the PD3200U. :-(

Thanks in advance for your help.

The BL3201PH worked while using HDMI through that adapter?

It sounds like you might need to wait for a update to support proper scale for the monitor. You might want to do a reset all settings within the monitor and then select different scale modes and see if that helps, other then that do a power cycle of the monitor as well. Let us know if you do have further questions.

Thank you
